Zimkhitha Manyana is a lecturer in International Relations at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and a PhD candidate in Political Science at the University of Johannesburg. His research is deeply rooted in the intersection of technology and democracy, focusing on how digital tools can enhance democratic practices and institutional transparency. His PhD thesis, titled "Technologies of Accountability: Digitalisation and Institutionalised Transparency in South Africa�s Parliament since 2019," explores the role of digitalisation in promoting transparency within parliamentary processes.In 2021, Manyana co-authored an article titled "The Rise of Fake News: Surveying the Effects of Social Media on Informed Democracy," highlighting the impact of social media on public discourse. He also contributed Chapter 5, "Neopatrimonialism and Digital Client Politics: The Use of Big Data in African Electoral Campaigns," in the 2024 book The 4IR and the Humanities in South Africa: Perspectives on Innovation, Power, and Potentialities.At Wits, Manyana teaches a new Masters course, Advanced Issues in Diplomatic Engagements, which addresses contemporary challenges such as algorithmic manipulation, disinformation, and the role of technology in diplomatic contexts. His work reflects a commitment to advancing digital democracy and enhancing the integrity of democratic institutions through technology.
