In an overarching sense, A/Prof Howes work looks to counter the effects of agents/actors that propagate misinformation to interfere with national security, attempts to destabilise democracy or create widespread mistrust. He explores ways to combat misinformation in order to decrease polarisation, increase trust in the government or decrease trust in fringe groups. A/Prof Howes work investigates how social media such as Twitter helps to propagate misinformation that creates polarisation and threatens the foundations of democracy. He is working to figure out the most effective ways of counteracting the spread of misinformation. As a cognitive scientist he is interested in a human-centred approach to this problem. He is currently conducting behavioural experiments to better understand how to use technology to reduce the spread of misinformation, prototyping potential solutions using a Wizard of Oz technique. He is investigating what information humans need to receive in order not to re-tweet/post or spread false information. A/Prof Howe is also looking to develop strategies that nudge people to look at more reliable sources of information.
