Professor Crystal Abidin is a digital anthropologist specializing in Influencer cultures, online visibility, and social media pop cultures, particularly in the Asia Pacific region. She has published over 100 articles and chapters and authored several books on internet celebrity and vernacular internet cultures. Her books have been adopted as research guides at Google, Meta, and TikTok, and her publications have been adopted in over 140 international syllabi. For her notable partnership with the tech industry and public scholarship, Crystal has received several international and national industry awards, including the WA Young Tall Poppy Science Award (2022), The Australian Top 40 Early Career Researchers (2021), ABC TOP 5 Humanities Fellowship (2021), Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia (2018), and Pacific Standard Magazine 30 Top Thinkers Under 30 (2016). Her research on child Influencers has informed policies for government and platforms, and international documentaries. Crystal is Professor of Internet Studies at Curtin University, Director of the Influencer Ethnography Research Lab, Founder of the TikTok Cultures Research Network, Associate Investigator at the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child, Deputy Director at the Korea Research Centre, and Programme Lead of Social Media Pop Cultures at the Centre for Culture and Technology.
