IPIE Launches Global Initiatives to Advance Digital Literacy and Information Integrity with Knight Foundation Support
December 2024
The International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) is advancing efforts to improve digital literacy and information integrity through groundbreaking initiatives over the next three years. These include launching a new panel on digital literacy, convening global experts, and enhancing engagement with policymakers.
This important work is made possible in part by a $750,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The funding will also support a new cohort of IPIE policy fellows and a landmark global summit on the information environment, which will bring together research scientists and experts from around the world in New York City. Additionally, the grant provides key support to the IPIE Scientific Panel on Indexing the Information Environment, addressing the urgent need for comprehensive digital assessment metrics.
Professor Phil Howard, President of the IPIE, said:
"We are so grateful to partner with Knight Foundation to further our shared values of democracy and transparency. Knight’s support will enable the IPIE to continue our work of organizing, evaluating, and elevating research to improve the global information environment.”
Through these initiatives, the IPIE continues to build scientific consensus and advance solutions to critical issues in our rapidly evolving digital landscape.
John Sands, Senior Director for Media and Democracy at Knight Foundation, said:
“The research community today is producing growing volumes of scholarship to help us better understand our complex information environment. We’re supporting IPIE’s work to help shorten the gaps between observation and scientific consensus and between insight and more informed policy.”
