IPIE at the G20: Advancing Information Integrity Across Critical Global Issues
November 2024
The International Panel on the Information Environment (IPIE) is proud to announce its involvement in a series of events at the G20 Summit in Brazil, addressing the critical need for reliable information in the realms of climate action, global governance, and scientific discourse.
During the Summit, IPIE experts attended key events where they presented insights and findings from the IPIE's research on combating disinformation and fostering trust in information systems. During the Summit, the IPIE was also announced as a founding member of the Advisory Group for the new Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change. The IPIE’s engagement in this series of events at the G20 reflects the IPIE's commitment to fostering a global environment where reliable information is the bedrock of decision-making in critical areas.
Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change
This new Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change, established by the Brazilian Government in collaboration with the United Nations Department of Global Communications and UNESCO, will constitute a partnership of countries, international organizations, and other stakeholders from all regions of the world. It will work together to promote and defend information integrity on climate change through funding for research and strategic action, advocacy, and diplomacy. The Initiative will drive efforts to inform and bolster official communications on climate action.
As a founding member of the Advisory Group, the IPIE will provide advice on technical issues, analyze documents on the results of the research activities, validate the process and results of the research activities, and ensure that the highest technical standards are respected.
This initiative will become a strong coalition of countries and organizations dedicated to promoting information integrity on climate change. This multilateral collaboration will support the formulation of effective policies based on scientific evidence, as well as the promotion of information ecosystems that allows for reliable, diverse, and accurate information and knowledge.
Information Integrity and Climate Change, G20 Social/CRIA - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
As part of the G20 Social events in Rio de Janeiro, IPIE President, Professor Philip Howard, joined global leaders, researchers, and civil society in a discussion on the impacts of climate disinformation on public policy and engagement. This event launched the Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change and highlighted the challenges posed by climate disinformation, especially its role in hampering effective climate action.
Participants of this event in Rio de Janeiro will work towards a collaborative proposal for the Brazilian Chapter of the Global Initiative, aimed at uniting efforts from civil society, academia, and government.
Disinformation, Science, and Climate, hosted by the IPIE and InternetLab - São Paulo, Brazil
This in-depth discussion at InternetLab explored disinformation, algorithmic manipulation, and information integrity on topics related to the environment and science. Professor Philip Howard presented the latest findings from the IPIE’s Global Expert Survey 2024, including the launch of the Portuguese translation of the study, addressing how social media and the influence of artificial intelligence impact global issues such as climate change.
Co-panelists João Guilherme Santos (Democracia em Xeque) and Iná Jost (InternetLab) discussed local and global challenges posed by science-related misinformation, emphasizing the importance of verified information for environmental policy and scientific literacy.
